What’s Spaceman about?

Jakub Procházka, played by Adam Sandler, was abandoned as a young boy and raised by his grandparents in the Czech countryside. He began his career as a scientist and later became the Czech Republic’s first astronaut. Six months into his solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, Jakub realizes that his marriage to Lenka (played by Carey Mulligan) might be over when he returns to Earth. In an attempt to save his marriage, he seeks help from a mysterious creature named Hanuš (voiced by Dano), who he discovers hiding in his spaceship. Together, they work to unravel the issues in Jakub’s relationship before it’s too late.

Six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth. Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan), he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Hanuš (voiced by Dano) works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it’s too late.

For Kalfař, this cosmic tale had humble origins. “Spaceman began as a short story that I wrote in my last year of college,” he told Netflix. “Originally, it was just a punch line about an American astronaut who was stranded in orbit when he received a call from his wife asking for a divorce.” As Kalfař expanded it into a full-length novel, the story grew larger and larger, eventually becoming a tale of love, space, time, and the author’s own Czech family. Not bad for a senior year college project.

“Spaceman” is a science fiction film based on Jaroslav Kalfař’s novel. Adam Sandler plays Jakub Procházka, an astronaut sent on a mission to explore a mysterious cloud of dust known as the ‘Chopra Cloud’. The film follows Jakub’s struggles with isolation in space and his personal issues. His wife, Lenka (played by Carey Mulligan), is also dealing with her own problems back on Earth, which adds emotional depth to the story. However, some aspects of the story feel underdeveloped.

The film introduces a twist when Jakub encounters a telepathic spider named Hanuš, voiced by Paul Dano. Through their interactions, Jakub confronts his inner demons and gains insight into his loneliness.

However, the film struggles to find its identity. The casting choices and disjointed storytelling create confusion, while some characters lack depth. Despite these flaws, Adam Sandler delivers a compelling performance, showcasing his trademark humor. Mulligan also shines in her role, but the screenplay fails to fully explore her character’s complexities. Paul Dano’s voice work adds a touch of whimsy to the somber atmosphere.

Overall, “Spaceman” has moments of brilliance but falls short of its potential. With stronger writing and character development, it could have been a captivating sci-fi drama.
