“Kaiju No. 8” is set in a world plagued by monstrous creatures known as Kaiju. As Japan faces the highest rate of kaiju attacks in the world and to combat them, they established the Anti-Kaiju Defence Force. In such a world plagued by creatures known as Kaiju, Kafka Hibino aspired to enlist in The Defence Force. He makes a promise to enlist with his childhood friend, Mina Ashiro.

Soon, life takes them in separate ways. Mina, now 27, has since become the captain of the Defence Force’s Third Division while Kafka, now 32, has failed the examination numerous times and works as a member of a clean-up crew that disposes of kaiju remains after the battle. While on such clean up after the Kaiju battle, Kafka meets Reno Ichikawa. Reno’s determination to join The Defence Force reawakens Kafka’s promise to join Mina and protect humanity.

Through the eyes of characters like Kafka Hibino, Mina Ashiroand Reno Ichikawa, the series explores themes of courage, friendship, and the relentless pursuit of justice against insurmountable odds. With each Kaiju encounter, the stakes are raised, and viewers are drawn deeper into the gripping narrative.

Creator’s Vision:

Kaiju No.8 manga was created by the visionary mind of Naoya Matsumoto; it first gained acclaim through its serialization manga publication in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ digital magazine in July 2020, with an English language version available from VIZ Media, as well as on Manga Plus.

Matsumoto stated that Kaiju No.8 was influenced by monster verse media such as the “Ultraman” series and the “Godzilla” series. Seeing as this can be an entertaining concept, Matsumoto wanted to create a story that follows a protagonist who has to achieve their goal while hiding their monstrous identity from a hostile organization they are also a part of.

Matsumoto’s dynamic storytelling and captivating artwork have drawn readers into a world teeming with danger and intrigue. Now, with the transition to anime, Matsumoto’s vision is set to reach even greater heights.
